Diane Kahn

Diane Kahn has been a teacher and social justice advocate for more than two decades, and she’s the founder and Executive Director of Humans of San Quentin. She worked inside San Quentin for seven years helping incarcerated men earn their high school diplomas, and as co-director of the Academic Peer Education Project she trained them to teach and mentor their peers. In 2017 she helped win approval of California's Rehabilitative Achievement Credit, which lets participants in programs like these earn time off their parole dates.

Diane started Humans of San Quentin during the pandemic with Juan Haines, an incarcerated journalist she met while teaching. Through Humans of San Quentin, they share the stories, art, poetry, and recipes of more than 4,500 people in prisons across the US and around the world, through interviews, a podcast, an audio series, and published books. A third of their team is currently behind bars.
